KUMAUS FESTIVAL
ART X MUSIC FESTIVAL IN LAPPEENRANTA, FINLAND
ARTISTIC DIRECTORS:
Helka Seppälä, Janne Valkeajoki & Lauri Pekkarinen

WHAT IS KUMAUS FESTIVAL?
Since 2019, the Kumaus Festival has shaken up Finland's festival scene. What began as a three-day event has now grown into a five-day celebration of art and music, held in Lappeenranta—a scenic lakeside city in southeastern Finland.
Under the artistic direction of double bassist Helka Seppälä, percussionist Lauri Pekkarinen and accordionist-conductor Janne Valkeajoki, the festival set out to boldly create something new—driven purely by the team's own artistic passions.
Today, Kumaus stands as a trailblazer in innovation and a distinctive expression of the many faces of art, unbound by genre or convention—with world premieres of works by intenationally acclaimed composers such as Kalevi Aho and Vito Žuraj and an interesting traidmark concept of blind concerts.

BLIND CONCERTS FULL OF SURPRISES
Since the beginning, the trademark of the Kumaus festival has been known to be the whole world by standards, a unique blind concert concept; a concert where the audience is not given a handbook and the program is not told in advance other than a couple of interesting sentences. With the heart of the artistic management beating strongly for the newest, oldest, light and experimental music, it was considered important to create a space as safe as possible for people to get to know all of this without prejudice.
The idea of a concert was born, where a raging contemporary music performance could be followed by something the most beautiful lied, from which the jazz trio takes the booth and leads the audience to the intermission to chew on everything that just happened. An essential part of the concerts is the role of the artistic management as "tour guides", presenters and co-experiencers with the audience.

CONCERT IN THE PARKING HALL
OR WINE CELLAR
The Kumaus festival has found its place on the domestic festival grounds in August weekends. In addition to the OSA I, OSA II & OSA III blind concerts of the festival, Kumaus resonates all over the city of Lappeenranta both in the candlelit church concert that has become a tradition, as well as in the most surprising locations, also delighting the audience that appreciates more traditional concerts or, for example, passers-by shopping.

Here are some of the venues from previous Kumaus Festivals:
Stefan Prins' Generation Kill in an old Cinema - Kumaus 2023

Shostakovich in a Parking lot P4 - Kumaus 2021

Folk music for string quartet by the lake - Kumaus 2023

Schönberg in Candle Light Church - Kumaus 2024

KUMAUS TRIO

Kumaus Trio is a Finnish contemporary music ensemble with a rare and distinctive instrumentation of accordion, double bass, and percussion — a combination that makes the trio unique both in Finland and internationally. The group has premiered works by 11 composers, creating an entirely new and expanding repertoire for this unusual ensemble.
The trio’s story began with the shared dream of three young musicians to found Kumaus Festival and bring new music to life through it. Over the past six years, that dream has evolved into an ongoing collaboration with numerous composers. Kumaus Trio has commissioned and premiered works by Vito Žuraj, Kalevi Aho, Veli Kujala, Tara Valkonen, Arshia Samsaminia, Tuomas Kettunen, Aino Tenkanen, Kalle Autio, Teemu Heinonen, Tatu Piitulainen, and Ue Hang Wong.
In addition to commissioned works, Kumaus Trio moves fluidly across different eras and musical styles. The trio has performed and arranged music by J. S. Bach, Igor Stravinsky, Thierry De Mey, Teppo Hauta-aho, and Vesa-Matti Loiri. The group has also performed together with the dream pop duo Karina and jazz musicians Matti Saarinen andvibraphone player Arttu Takalo.
The trio’s members are the founders and artistic directors of Kumaus Festival in Lappeenranta, and in addition to performing there, the ensemble has appeared in Helsinki and at festivals such as Musica nova Helsinki and Ja Kitara Soi.
In 2023, Kumaus Trio received the Martin Wegelius Memorial Foundation Award, and later that year gave its first independent concert at Helsinki’s Temppeliaukio Church, produced by the Finnish Soloists’ Association.
